3D LABORATORY PLANNING MADE EASY AND A FOCUS
ON SAVING ENERGY – CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS ARE
AT THE CENTRE OF KÖTTERMANN’S SERVICE

  • Saving energy in the laboratory: With the EcoPlus fume cupboard, Köttermann offers a sustainable fume cupboard solution.

  • Laboratory rooms are easily planned in 3D with the pcon planning software using a smartphone or tablet.

  • Flexible furniture solutions with added value: an underbench cabinet as a storage space miracle.

Energy-saving, safe research

Hänigsen, 11 June 2024. Laboratory work is energyintensive. A study by Harvard University found that the research rooms used for this purpose take up around a fifth of the space, yet consume almost half of the total energy. 44 per cent of this is directly related to ventilation, which in turn is significantly influenced by the fume cupboards.1 This once again enclosed working space in the laboratory is essential for the safe use of hazardous substances such as volatile organic compounds or acids. However, the conditioned air extracted from the laboratory must be treated in an energy-intensive and expensive process. Reducing air consumption is therefore one of the most important requirements in the development of fume cupboards, alongside occupational safety.

The fume cupboard for more sustainable work in the laboratory

The Köttermann EcoPlus fume cupboard requires a low air volume flow due to its special air technology and design. With a recommended, constant volume flow of 275 m³/h per metre of fume cupboard width, the lowenergy fume cupboard consumes around 30 percent less exhaust air than a standard fume cupboard on the market. This saves up to 1,000 euros in operating costs per year. The EcoPlus saves energy without the need to install an exhaust air control system. This makes this type of fume cupboard the ideal choice for laboratories that are not equipped with a sophisticated exhaust air system. The centrepiece is the unique flow technology: This reduces the air volume flow while simultaneously fulfilling all safety requirements. The standards are correspondingly high: In the robustness test to assess the performance of fume cupboards, the test gas burst of the EcoPlus is 70 per cent below the limit value required by the BG RCI for fume cupboards. Energy consumption can also be reduced with the sash. Exhaust air control systems, such as those from Köttermann partner Siemens, reduce the exhaust air flow when the sash is closed without jeopardising the safety of the fume cupboard.

Visualise ideas in 3D

Set up laboratories flexibly via smartphone and place the new Köttermann products in the desired environment using AR: pcon is the new planning software from Köttermann for planning laboratories in three dimensions. The conditions on site can be imported directly and the desired furniture elements can be placed and moved in the virtual space. This turns laboratory staff into laboratory planning professionals. Thanks to the high-quality visualisation, the ideas appear close enough to touch right from the start. The product catalogue offers almost all Köttermann products for furnishing and the individual elements can be adapted to dimensions and technical requirements. The configurator enables intuitive selection of the required equipment. As soon as the virtual room is set up, different perspectives can be viewed by dragging across the screen and photographed directly. Köttermann products can also be checked for correct placement directly in the real environment using augmented reality (AR).

Storage space miracle for consumables

Corner cabinets open up storage space options and combine base cabinet solutions in an elegant way. Adapted to the diverse requirements in laboratories, Köttermann has designed the new Octo corner underbench cabinet, which combines space, ergonomics and flexibility. This practical storage space – made of durable steel as usual – which offers the entire depth of the cabinet, is ideal for storing consumables such as glove boxes, pipettes tips or paper towels. Planned as a corner, end or island cabinet solution, the octogonal design, which is characteristic of Köttermann, simplifies work routes. There are no furniture corners protruding into the room, which also minimises the risk of injury. The Octo underbench cabinet is also available in different construction depths and working heights to suit the room dimensions for customised laboratory planning.

A Köttermann Laboratory is being build in Mecca

Hänigsen, 05 February 2024: Manufacturing a laboratory for the holy Zamzam water from Mecca in Saudi Arabia: What almost sounds like the title of a fairytale story is becoming reality for Köttermann, based in Hänigsen, Lower Saxony. Commissioned in January 2024, the new laboratory facilities in Mecca are to be completed by May of this year. The special contract to build an advanced laboratory infrastructure is being carried out together with the local dealer Gulf Bioanalytical. The quality of the holy water will be tested here to the highest standards. “We are honoured to contribute to the construction of such an important laboratory with our laboratory equipment,” says Managing Director Kazim Doyuran, describing Köttermann’s delight at having been chosen for the project.

The Zamzam water, which is extracted from the holy well of the same name near the Kaaba in Mecca, is of immense importance to the Muslim world. It is considered blessed, exceptionally pure and healing. Water plays an important role in Islamic traditions and rituals. Every year, almost three million people head to Mecca during the great Hajj (pilgrimage) and throughout the year for the short pilgrimage Umra. One of the sacred rituals on site is the drinking of Zamzam water. Kazim Doyuran emphasises the importance of building the laboratory: “This project reflects our commitment to supporting initiatives that positively strengthen cultural values and communities.”

Köttermann becomes an affiliate company of the Block group

With a solid economic position, Köttermann is directly owned by the BHM group a.s. to which the BLOCK Group also belongs.

At the end of June, the former parent company BLOCK Group a.s. sold its shares at the Köttermann company to the superordinate Czech BHM Group based in Prague.

Only four years after the insolvency, Köttermann and the Czech BLOCK Group are now equal in the portfolio of the parent company BHM group a.s. Tomas and Marek Krsek, who have been responsible for the successful corporate strategy since the takeover by the BLOCK Group, maintain their economic rights.

The growing economic importance of the Köttermann Group has made it possible to put Köttermann on equal footing with BLOCK Group a.s. The new organization is supporting the strategic management of Köttermann. The areas of sales, finance, insurance and risk management will be further strengthened and future growth will be favoured in the long term.

After the flood: A new laboratory for the Sinzig sewage treatment plant

Masses of water in the Ahrtal destroy laboratory facility. Uncomplicated project management by Köttermann supports a new laboratory setup in the container village only five months after the destruction.

Last year’s flood in the Ahrtal was not only destructive for countless households, but also for many companies and facilities. Among them was the sewage treatment plant in Sinzig, whose equipment, including the laboratory, was almost completely destroyed – only the shell remained intact after the floods. Within only five months, a container village was built on the grounds of the sewage treatment plant with new facilities to ensure the operation of the wastewater treatment plant as quickly as possible. The organisation of the new laboratory facilities was carried out in a short time through hand-in-hand work by Köhler GmbH in Andernach as the project management and assembly expert and the laboratory equipment company Köttermann. Thanks to the interlocking trades, operations could be resumed only five months after the flood.

The flood had submerged the laboratory rooms of the wet/dry laboratory with office compartment up to half a metre under water. The laboratory equipment was completely destroyed – including acid and alkali cabinets, freezers, thermo- and refrigerators, computers and a fume cupboard. The Abwasserzweckverband Untere Ahr (Lower Ahr Wastewater Association), which is based in the region and has been associated with the association for many years, commissioned the company Köhler GmbH with the new installation. The temporary container village enabled new ready-to-occupy room solutions as quickly as possible. In view of what had been experienced, the attributes of quality and durability played a decisive role in the selection of the new laboratory furnishing components – with laboratory furniture made of steel, the Köttermann company offers exactly the durable and flexible furnishing that was desired. Fortunately, the flood had not destroyed a new laboratory: the old furnishings from the eighties were already getting on in years, so now new product solutions not only provide a modern look, but also make everyday work easier. For example, the fume cupboard could be combined with the acid/alkali cabinet to save space. The laboratory planners also chose spacious base units, as hanging cabinets are not allowed in the rental containers.

Repairing all the flood damage in the sewage treatment plant took and still takes time. It will take several years to rebuild and replace interim solutions. As the largest plant in the Ahrtal, it is designed for 115,000 inhabitants and is thus of great importance for water protection. New plans include expanding the capacity to 170,000 inhabitants – according to the latest technical possibilities and flood-protected.

For 75 years, the Köttermann company in Hänigsen, Lower Saxony, has been producing flexible laboratory equipment solutions for customers from over 40 industry segments. Individual components are produced to meet specific needs and provide a safe laboratory working environment. The product portfolio includes laboratory furniture and fume cupboards, fume extraction systems, air management, safety and hazardous material cupboards and media supply systems.
